The town of Chemainus, nestled on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island in Canada, is a beautiful experience to visit and a must for every tourist to Vancouver, Canada. This charming little town has everything that a discerning traveler looks for. It’s a great place to let your mind and body recharge after a hectic travel itinerary.
From a logging town, it has gradually evolved in to a beautiful tourist town known for it’s outdoor murals, which gives it a unique distinction. The tourist attraction of the murals has created a host of other facilities and activities like exquisite restaurants, hotels, antique stalls, performing arts, live band performances, theater and more. With the added advantage of being on the shore, Chemainus stands out as a picturesque tourist destination, charming to the eyes and easy on the legs.
Chemainus can be reached by ferry, air, coach or car from the Vancouver mainland or by road from Victoria BC. The town is about 80 km from Victoria BC, about an hour by coach or car on Highway 1 towards Nanaimo.
On the way to Chemainus
If traveling by car, it is worthwhile to have a short break at Cherry Point Vineyards which is about 50 km (30 miles) from Victoria BC. Simply follow the signs to the vineyard and take a short, self-guided tour or if you have time, a guided trip through the vineyards.
Hop in the welcoming tasting cum sales point; be a connoisseur & relish the taste of delicious wines on offer. Besides wine tasting, the place provides dining service as well. Do not forget to grab at a few bottles of wines to relish later.
After about 30 km (19 miles) more along the highway, look for the signs and turn towards Chemainus. As soon as you enter the town, you realize that you are now far away from the humdrum of a busy and noisy city.
The beautiful and tranquil way of life here, dominated by murals along with music, glittering antiques, artifacts, paintings, souvenirs and more will incise you to just relax and enjoy life.
There are plenty of places to see in the nearby, but in any case do include Victoria BC and Chemainus in you plan when visiting Vancouver Island. And on the way back don’t miss Duncan, the town known for its totems!

Best time to visit is summer and light clothes will do.
There are plenty of hotels Like Best Western Plus Chemainus Inn, Fuller Lake Motel and others for various budgets and a host of and B&B options. Search on net and book.
How To Get There
There are many convenient options such as: bus, car, ferries, airplane or seaplane. It is easy to book on the spot and but advisable to book in advance online. A couple of options from Vancouver and Victoria BC are:
- Take a flight to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island and then take a taxi or shuttle bus to Chemainus, 35 km south on Highway 1.
- Take bus service from downtown Vancouver or Vancouver Airport to Tawwassen Ferry Terminal, book a Ferry ticket to Nainamo. At Nainamo, take a bus or taxi to Chemainus.
From Victoria BC
Drive or take a bus from Victoria . Chemainus is about 80 km (50 miles) north or one hour away.
